During a blizzard in 1999, the south shore commuter railroad (NICTD) faced an 18 inch snowfall along with temperatures reaching 17 degrees below 0. These conditions caused motor alternator units to be changed in approximately 18% of a 55 car fleet with 15 cars per night reported out of order.

"Several motor alternator sets developed electrical fault conditions, necessitating removal of the massive units, which were sent to Harrison Electric, Inc. of Michigan City for repair. This process normally takes up to seven working days ; however, the repairs were compressed into an approximately 32-hour cycle per machine. " NICTD also sent in numerous GE 1258 traction motors for repair at the same time.
